Chippendale Writing Desk

A George III superb mahogany partner’s writing table in the manner of Thomas Chippendale.

In its overall form it reflects Chippendale’s later neo-classical style, the linear qualities of which are most evident in the use of columnar rather than cabriole legs. Of the tapering square section, they end in pedestal feet concealing hardwood castors.

Pleasing linear symmetry is also apparent in the carcass which, under a leather-lined top, features five drawers on either side and four dummies at each end – all with original, hand-chased gilt metal drop handles.

Four short and one long drawer to each side and four dummy drawers at each end, on square tapering legs and moulded term feet. Original handles, locks and castors.

The shaped block feet on the present table closely relate to those on a library table supplied by Thomas Chippendale for the Library at Nostell Priory circa 1767.
